Bringing the legend of King Arthur to life

Set amongst stunning scenery, Tintagel Castle is inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur. As part of a recent visitor centre refurbishment, English Heritage commissioned us to create a new installation to tell Tintagel’s ancient stories to a 21st century audience.

The exhibit aimed to explore both the significant role of Tintagel in medieval history, and the castle’s prominence in English folklore. We wanted the motion and content of the installation to capture the essence of both the real and the mythic.

We created an animation which was projection mapped onto a 3D printed model of Tintagel. Showing how the architecture evolved through history alongside historical events, the animation is accompanied by illustrative images, text and an immersive soundscape. To keep the text very sharp, we decided to print it directly on the plinth and use the projector’s light to highlight it. The way the animation moves and flows is intentionally spectral, almost mythical, whilst also being informative.
