IET Exhibition App

Introducing the Internet of Things to museums

In order to help visitors discover the IET's headquarters at Savoy Place, London, we developed an app. It includes an in-built floor plan helps guests navigate around the historic building, locate conference and event spaces and access a daily diary of events, as well as discover more about the hidden history of IET London.

The exploratory design of the app has seen over 40 iBeacons built into walls throughout the interior and exterior of the venue; each beacon is located close to items of interest, including the ‘100 Engineering Ideas that Changed the World’ exhibit and digital chandelier. Detecting BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) the app uses a phone or tablet’s Bluetooth as visitors get within close proximity, up to 20m, of a beacon the device receives a push notification with exclusive content about the item and what you’re looking at. The venue app also allows event organisers to upload ‘on the day’ content for their events including programmes, delegate lists, videos and sponsor logos. This use of IoT (Internet of Things technology) has significant consequences for museum engagement.

The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Android Store. It builds upon the three experiential installations Squint/Opera recently created for the IET.
